Year 9The activities listed on this page are designed to compliment a larger unit of work designed for a Year 9 History class. The sequences have been inspired from several resources, relating to museums, digital storytelling, and Google Earth, on my Scoop.it account. I have attached a curator's insight to each of the resources, which may also be located on my Coconut Scoops page. The sequences have been developed to address content descriptions and requirements for Year 9 history outlined in the Australian Curriculum.
Depth study 3 World War I (1914-1918) Students investigate key aspects of World War I and the Australian experience of the war, including the nature and significance of the war in world and Australian history.* The aim of this unit is to make learning authentic by relating historical events to the real world through site and virtual visits. Students explore historical inquiry questions about World War I through the lens of a service person. Students examine sources for their relevance, develop their own inquiry questions, analyse the causes and effects of the Great War, develop a chronological sequence and explain the actions of people and how the events have affected today's society. Students must also develop texts to present their conclusions, referencing all sources and acknowledging safe and ethical practices. Sequences detailed below lead to the creation and presentation of a more complex ICT, task which can be used for assessment. The outline could also be implemented for teaching other Humanities subject and could be adapted particularly well for the Geography curriculum. Sequence 1For this lesson, the class will physically visit the Army Museum North Queensland.
Sequence 2Examining World War I, the students research their service personnel, collecting information and images relating to their deployments. Details of the task are placed on the class Weebly page.
Sequence 3
Students develop their Google Earth digital stories further for their final presentations, which may be submitted to the school's entry into the ANZAC Premier's Prize. This competition chooses 8 students from across the state of Queensland to go on a fully-funded educational group tour of Gallipoli and the Western Front with two Education Queensland chaperones. Two submissions from the school will be selected and sent to Brisbane for the finals.
